Howard H. Rye Solo Competition The Howard H. Rye Solo Competition, honoring the founder of the BNYS, is held yearly in late February and is open only to Junior and Senior members of the Bloomington Normal Youth Symphony. - Students are allowed to audition an instrument other than the one they play in the symphony.
- Selections for the competition must be 10 minutes or less and orchestral accompaniment must be readily available.
- Applications for the competition are due by the first rehearsal of the Spring semester.
- Judging will done on a separate evening from rehearsals and judged by specialists on the instruments of students competing.
- Several judges will hear all competitors and select the one performer who is judged most capable of performing successfully in a concert setting.
- Winning will also include a monetary award. The judges may also decide to present a monetary award to a runner up.
